In December, the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi awarded a $10,000 grant to Digital Opportunity Trust USA, Inc. (DOT USA) to help serve 51 schools through its unique TeachUp! Technology Empowerment Program. This grant will allow the TeachUp! Program to impact more than 2,200 teachers with technology integration support, helping them to create technology-infused and engaging lessons for over 38,000 students in Desoto, Tate, Marshall, and Tallahatchie counties during the 2011-2012 school year.
"We are excited and grateful to receive this $10,000 grant, our third annual grant from the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi, to deliver unique and effective technology empowerment services to the public schools in their Northwest Mississippi counties," said Nuria Arias, Executive Director of DOT USA. "This foundation is deeply committed to bringing the best possible education resources to the public schools in their region, and we are honored to be their ongoing partner in this effort."
The $10,000 grant will enable DOT USA to place 51 TeachUp! Technology Empowerment Interns for a full year of service in the following school districts: Desoto County, Marshall County, Holly Springs, Senatobia and West Tallahatchie.
Through DOT USA's TeachUp! Program, tech-savvy young professionals are recruited, given extensive training in educational technologies, and then placed in public schools where they spend a full year offering one-on-one technology integration support to teachers, empowering them to accelerate the use of 21st century technology in classrooms to boost student success, engagement and retention.
In addition to serving in public schools, the 51 TeachUp! Interns also provide technology training and support in community sites for adults, who wish to improve their technology skills to qualify for better-paying jobs.
The Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi is headquartered in Hernando, MS and serves eight northwest Mississippi counties: Tate, Tunica, Marshall, Coahoma, Desoto, Quitman, Panola and Tallahatchie counties. This is the third year that the TeachUp! Program has provided interns to serve in public schools in the 8-county region served by the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi.
