PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -

America's Promise Alliance's recognized the Pascagoula School District, which includes schools in both Pascagoula and Gautier, as one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People in the country.

The district held a big watch party to celebrate Wednesday morning, and it was anything but dull. Students and teachers were dancing and cheering while waiting to hear they won such a prestigious award.

"Pascagoula was recognized as one of three best school districts in America to receive this honor," Superintendent Wayne Rodolfich said.

Between all the cheers and chants, a few students told WLOX they couldn't be more excited to be part of a stand out district.

"My first reaction was, 'Oh my, how could we be considered?'" said Gautier High School student Jami Loftus. "But when you look back at the Pascagoula School District, the teachers just care about us so much."

America's Promise Alliance picks communities based on what's being done to help promote education. Superintendent Rodolfich the district strives to make learning fun and fulfilling.

"We do our Destination Graduation program. Of course, our music programs, we have really instilled the arts. As you can see, we have hundreds of children playing instruments."

District leaders also look at the Pascagoula Interactive Center as a great learning tool. There are journalism and wetlands rooms, along with dozens of state of the art computers and electronic gadgets for students.

"We come out on Saturdays to work with children to make sure [they have a] safe place to play."

After an hour of the crowd showing true school spirit, the big announcement from America's Promise Alliance was made. All the screaming and clapping drowned out much of the ceremony, but that didn't matter to this crew. The students and teachers said they're just honored to be named one of the best of the best.
